Emotions run the gamut

Yesterday was a day that really tugged at my emotions.

First, the news of the tragic boat accident that claimed the life of young Marlins Pitcher Jose Fernandez and lets not forget two of his friends whose lives were no less important. A terrible loss for those families. Fernandez was destined for a great baseball career and his infectious spirit for the game will be missed.

Later in the day came word of the passing of The King of Golf, Arnold Palmer. He was the man that elevated the game to greater heights and today's players owe him all of their gratitude for what they have today. He also was one of the pioneers of athlete product endorsements and he was so popular, that he was still greatly sought after even into his last years. Besides making Bay Hill a top tier PGA event, his philanthropic work in both Latrobe and Orlando and as one of the founding fathers of The Golf Channel, Arnold Palmer left not just his mark on golf but life itself. Toast his life with his namesake drink.

Emotions of another kind were in play for Vin Scully's last Dodger home game broadcast. It was amazing how the players acknowledged him in the batters box and at the end of the game. As the greatest baseball play by play man ever, I will be tuning into his final week via the MLB At Bat app to savor his craft. His 67 year career has touched many but his humility has always kept the game and the fans first. Just a great example of class through and through.

Tonite's Saints-Falcons Monday night tilt is the anniversary of their game 10 years ago when the Saints made their triumphant return to a rebuilt Superdome after Hurricane Katrina. Sometimes we place too much emphasis on the sports world to the point of ignoring far greater and important things, but sports has always played an integral part in helping communities heal and rebound from disaster and tragedy.
